I believe the connection is there to deliberately transfer heat, to ensure
that fuel cannot puddle in the intake manifold (and possibly to help prevent
carburetor icing).  Later cars actually have a coolant pipe that runs
through the intake manifold for the same reason.

My TR3A is missing the studs, and one of the exhaust manifold brackets.
AFAIK I've never had any trouble with fuel puddling or carburetor icing, but
I live in a warm dry climate where they usually aren't problems anyway.
