  Yup...that was my problem exactly, first noticed white smoke out the 
breather, then did just what you did to confirm.  Of course the only 
real, positive check is to pull the head, the carb cleaner trick will 
help but in the long run you are going to have to check the piston(s) 
I had broken rings on two cylinders and about two inches of land 
broken off of one piston, fortunately the rings held it in place and 
I caught the problem before it became catastrophic.

Either way, that piston's coming out.

Many years ago I had an MG who's engine went south on my.  When I pulled it
apart one piston had lost its top ring altogether (broke into small chunks
which found their way out through a small opening in the top land), the
next two rings were broken into several pieces and the oil ring was fine). 
To top that off, my engine had two long skirt pistons and two short skirt
pistons.  I think I was DPO'd.  Anyway, I got better.
