I used to live in Texas and was even passed on the right on by cars driving
on one of these shoulders ... even by an oncoming car one time. A school
bus was coming towards me on a one of the FM roads out in the country when
suddenly a car pulled out to pass the bus just before we met. The driver
of the car saw he wouldn't be able to pass the bus before hitting me head
on. Instead of pulling back into his lane behind the bus, he just swung on
over onto the shoulder on *my* side of the road. I passed between his car
on my right and the school bus on my left. I still remember the look in
the school bus driver's eyes and I'm sure my eyes were just as
expressive! For some reason, we both knew that slamming on the brakes and
possibly losing control was the wrong thing to do at that moment and just
kept "flying straight and level" and praying the idiot doing the passing
didn't do something else unexpected. I don't remember what the bus driver
did but I had to pull over afterwards to get over the shakes...
