You did not mention whether your coolant level had changed. Gray, or
white
smoke out the tail pipe may mean that coolant is leaking into a combustion
chamber while it sits, then burns off when you start it. Another test would
be to start the car cold, remove the radiator cap and watch for bubbles that
smell like exhaust. Also, if the smoke out the exhaust has a sweet anti
freeze smell, it's another sign of a failed head gasket, or a hole behind
one of the exhaust valves into a coolant passage.

Hi All
My 71 TR6 engine appears to be in good shape,excellent compressions,uses
very little or no oil.However every time I start the car either cold or
hot it produces a significant cloud of grey smoke.Once the car is running
no more smoke.The car is fitted with a large bore straight through
exhaust system and I am wondering is the exhaust gases left in the system
when the engine is switched off are collecting and are then being blown
out on when the engine is restarted.
any comment from your own experiences?
