I have made more than a few wisecracks about the likely outcome of an
accident in a TR2. But a teenaged friend of our family had a close call in
(get this) a VOLVO! His heated seat short-circuited on the freeway, and
swiftly set the footwell carpet on fire. He couldn't hit the brakes because
of the flames, so he rolled his window down (which saved his life) and ran
the car off the highway. It hit an embankment and flipped, and he escaped
through the window just moments before the gas tank exploded. Luckily he had
no passengers. . .the cops said that passengers would not have been able to
get out because of the way the car came to rest on its roof. My
thirteen-year-old cousin was supposed to ride home with him, but fortunately
he took another ride at the last moment.

Imagine. . .a near-death experience from a faulty seat heater. Shades of
Joseph Lucas?
