George,
You are right, and my memory was wrong, the apron was indeed off. My foot must 
have been on that cross brace that holds the inner fenders together.
I have heard that it's somehow possible to take the rad out the bottom by 
undoing all the steering linkage and applying 12 hours of labour, but after 
what I went through even with the apron off, it's hard to imagine. I can see 
the desire, given the likelihood of the paint getting dinged up while removing 
the apron. Mine's sure going back on with plety of anti-seize!

Do I understand you to say you removed the radiator without removing the
apron?  Is that possible?  Manual says remove the rad first but the
manual sometimes lies.
