Gee, your method sounds a lot better than mine... I always just used a
lighted match to see into the fuel tank.  :-)

I carry a fiberglass batten from one of my old windsurf sails.  The guage
works
fine now, but force of habit I guess.  Besides, they come in handy for
holding
stuff up.
