Over 20 years ago I pulled the original trans cover (similar mat'ls)
from my car, soaked it with fibreglass resin inside and out & reinforced
the inside (down side) with some strips of glass cloth. It's still in
the car, and still usable, although I have one of those new-fangled
plastic ones ready to go in during the current rebuild, just cause it's
purtier. The f'glass doesn't make for a fine finish by itself, but could
be painted with a flat black paint. The resin made it rigid, resistant
to oil (why would I need that quality on a TR?) and waterproof. Using
the glass cloth allowed me to repair some damaged areas pretty easily.
I didn't do the same with the radiator shroud at that time for one
reason, there wasn't one on the car at all. So I fabricated an aluminum
shroud (which has lasted until recently).
fyi: while the new plastic trans cover looks very good. I just recently
got one of the new plastic radiator shrouds. I have only test-fitted it,
but am not terribly impressed. It is very light-weight material and fits
up to the car quite differently than the original shroud. It also falls
short of my radiator by 2" or more, so to use it I will need to modify
it. Hmmm, I wonder if I was sent the wrong part!
