On the remote eastern side of Arizona there lives the beast, US 666. This
is an old road, newly paved that follows a twisting, turning path through
the
Apache-Sitgreaves national forest from the old mining town of Eager, to the
new mining town of Safford. Since it goes from nowhere to nowhere, very
few people use it. You'll probably see one or two other cars the entire
time you're on it. This road was built to exacting 1930's standards.
Hairpin turns posted at 10mph and triple esses on brand new pavement
winding from Alpine forests to the desert. In the fall, this is one of the
few places in Arizona you can see the leaves change, and on a fall day, top
down, double-clutching through an s turn, that's where you find me and my
spitfire. This is a true driver's road. You really have to think hard
about how fast to take that next turn up ahead. I swear, on some of those
turns, the road slants downward from the inside curve to the outside,
making it almost impossible not to fishtail. If you break down on this
road, prepare to spend the night. It's a great workout for your brain and
your body. Gorgeous views, a challenging road, all alone, what else could
you ask for?
