I've had great luck with Meguire's Smooth and Clean.  It's a
chunk of clay that you lubricate with a spray wax.  Mothers also
has a similar product.  I got it to clean paint overspray off my
finish.  It works wonders.  Lots of rubbing, made the surface
real smooth, but didn't pick up any of the color of the car.
I've also used it to remove rust spots on the paint of my Subaru,
which is now street parked.
