Well, it's a regular maintenance item so if it hasn't been done in a
while, it may be time. I don't recall the exact service interval but I'd
guess it's every 15,000 miles or so. Excessive tappet noise is also a
good indication that the valves need to be adjusted.

Yes, there is.

The stock gasket is made of cork.

Sometimes. Often, it breaks when the cover is removed, and almost always
it is oil-soaked and doesn't seal well when reused. Having a new one on
hand would be a good idea. I always try to have a new one around just in
case I need it - they are not expensive.
