Battery leads look okay and intact, but need some advice on where
to start looking. Battery is known good.

In addition to checking your terminals and battery-to-solenoid connections for 
corrosion, how about the ground strap?  On Spitfires it is unsubstantial and 
prone to corrosion, and/or even rust through?  A bad ground strap also would 
provide symptoms such as you describe ...
