Stag Gear Box Layshaft

The Triumph Stag factory workshop manual has a serious error regarding
removal of the layshaft.  This error is the instruction (unchanged from
the TR6 WS manual, no doubt the source of the error) that the layshaft be
removed through the FRONT of the gearbox. 
 Even the largest knock off hammer is not likely to facilitate
this, as the rear of the layshaft is of a much larger diameter than the front
of the shaft.  Try tapping the layshaft so that it exits the rear 
of the main casing, using due caution for the Stag only needle end
thrust bearings.
    BTW, who can tell me why I have a Stag Gearbox with a certified,
from the factory  identification marking  "SC2"
