Dennis,

This sounds a lot like a bad half axle U-joint to me.  Sometimes they
only click when the car is loaded a certain way.  Having a passenger
(or sometimes not) will cause the noise to come & go.  Also you may
only hear them when you are going around a corner.  It's not suprizing
the noise doesn't happen when the car is jacked up off the ground.
The noise will gradually get worse and easier to identify.
One other thing to check is the tightness of the axle nuts & bolts.

Rear wheel bearings tend to just produce a dull roar (louder at speed).
My money's on a U-joint being the culprit though.
