I'm pretty sure that it's necessary to replace both. If one is bad it will ruin
the other in short order. I'm in the process of switching to steel wheels for
awhile so I can see if my wires are rebuildable. My splines are good, but the
rims aren't too straight.

By the way I can get mine to clunk a little too, exactly in the speed range you
described. It's not a deadly sounding clank, more like a soft thumpy kind of
noise.
In my case I think it's a little play in the diff. I wouldn't be surprised if
they all do it a little.
