I agree basically with Tony's assessment (assuming that this is the 
original three-rail shifter gearbox). The approx. $20 kit from TRF or 
just about any other Triumph specialist will do the trick. Other than 
the time spent removing and replacing the dreaded transmission tunnel 
;-), it's the best $20 you can spend on just about any Herald, Vitesse, 
GT6 or pre-1975 (single-rail tranny from 75-on) Spitfire.

You'll probably not recognize the feel of the shifter when you're done, 
particularly since yours apparently was worn to the point of "collapse". 
99 time out of 100, this kit will bring shifting back to "as new" feel. 
Unfortunately, it won't cure worn synchros or other bits. :-(
