Your problem in getting the new diff properly positioned may be due to the
frame. The two uprights that hold the rear ears of the diff may need to be
forced out a bit. When that long rear bolt is really clamped down, the sides
of the channel can get compressed inward, making it tough to reposition the
diff. Spreading these outwards a bit can certainly help.
There isn't a whole lot of working room, so sticking in a hydraulic spreader
if you happen to have one may not work. But a large screwdriver and a small
crowbar, coupled with a bit of determination, should get the job done.
