Charlie,

The VSCDA board has affirmed that it is a club of racers of vintage
sportscars prepared to era standards, not vintage cars that look old with
modern upgrades.

See http://www.vscda.org/CarPrep/FocusOnCarPrep2006.pdf

For the record, I am not a board member. I do not make or vote on policy. I
am simply the group 2 rep. I pass on fact and opinion both ways from driver
to board, and board to driver. I also clearly label my own personal opinions
in my post, or, when there's something to be announced as official policy,
present it that way.

This whole exercise has been to keep the dialog open as policies are being
decided, so everyone's voice is heard.

There is no point in having rules that have the intention of leveling the
playing field in car preparation (so that driver skill becomes more of the
determining factor), and then not making those rules stick.

All racers have a choice in which car they choose to go racing in. Some
choose cars that inherently by design, or by legal means of race prep, are
better racers than others. Others choose cars that weren't competitive "in
the day", but hope to equalize (or over equalize) them by upgrading to more
modern specs, or exceeding capacities or acceptable equipment spelled out in
the rules.\

I have been on the track for years with guys that have "cheater motors', and
blast by you on the straights, and hold you up forever on the twisties. That
combination of cheating + lack of driver skill is especially frustrating to
participate with.

The "true vintage spirit" was not, nor is a "bring what you've got and we'll
throw you all together". We try to recreate the days of racing, prior to big
prize money, corporate sponsorships, etc. when racing was a gentlemen's
sport. There is nothing gentlemanly about over aggressive driving. that's
why we don't allow contact. There's nothing gentlemanly about claiming to
have a car that is rule compliant, and lying out your ass in an effort to
finish higher in place.

I suggest that in the true vintage spirit that ALL group cars may still run
on the same track and at the same time. As a mid-pack to back marker racer
(by choice) let's have fun. If a period correct car (vintage rules
compliant) is on the track with a hot rodded, non-period racer, so be it.
However, if all cars are rule compliant the racing has to be better, closer
and more fun.
