It is not uncommon for these pins to fall out completely - as originally
designed, they are only held in by friction.  Several owners have
replaced them with long bolts (unthreaded except at the end), to stop
this happening again.

A "metal drift" is really any long metal thing that you can put one end
on the pin and hammer on the other end to knock the pin out.  A long
bolt will work fine.  But if you have to hammer really hard you may mess
up the thread at the end of the bolt.

I wouldn't want to remove the pin with the transmission still attached
to the engine - the clutch fork will be left largely unsupported, will
move out of position, and you'll never get the new pin in.  If you use
the bolt you are using to replace the pin to push the pin out of
position, you may well get away with doing it with the tranny still in
place - certainly worth a shot, as all you've got to lose is removing
the tranny which you'd otherwise have done anyway.
