Welcome to sticker shock!  I remember paying $3.60 a gal for 3602 lacquer
thinner.  It's about  $20 / gal.

He told you right, epoxy primer (grey) or polyeurathine primer.  It is
totally water proof.  You can prime the car, leave it out in the weather
for months and then just wash it, scuff it, and put on color. 

I'm in the middle of doing the same thing with 2 of my Chrysler mini vans.
Starting with the roof.  Stripping, priming with polyeurathine then
eventually painting the color coats.

I know of one car done in a polyeurathine that sat for 5 yrs before it
was top coated.
