Remember, the overdrive units were made by LayCock De Normanville. A separate
company that made overdrive units fitted to hundreds of different vehicles
throughout history. They had a variety of ratios available for the choosing.
Triumph chose several ratios for various model cars, with one for the Spitfire
typically. 21% as I recall, though I'm not certain of it. Triumph was not
above using one of the other ratio units in a Spitfire if that was what fell to
hand in assembling it. Seems to me the 28% was the most common alternative
unit.
Now, with several decades passing, many overdrives from cars such as Volvo and
such have been fitted to Spitfires, further muddying the waters regarding the
particular ratio of a unit in hand, or mounted on a given car.

Can someone clear up what are the proper ratios for the d & j type
overdrives?
I have the figure of 0.8 - but the Haynes manual gives me odd numbers that
I don't understand. It also has the MkIV in there twice - both as D-types
- but the MkIV also had a J-type at the end of its life - which isnt
mentioned.
Can someone give me some definite figures?
