Just to illustrate this point, there are many
turbocharged cars out there running 9.5:1 or higher
CR, with 14 psi or greater boost. These are reliable
daily drivers running on (premium) pump gas.
A well designed and calibrated engine management
system is the key. 
Of course, it usually takes a wide band O2 sensor and
a dyno in the hands of an experienced tuner to achieve
this level of tuning.

Some people put down the Sport Compact Car movement 
(aka Rice-Burners or Rice-Boys), and they certainly do
have their share of posers. But there is a core of
sophisticated technical expertise and innovation that
I find refreshing. Much of it can also be applied to
our cars.
