(I don't often send this kind of e-mail, but since we recently had
discussions about reliability, and using our cars on
highways/motorways/etc, I thought I'd make an exception.)
Last night I returned from a weekend, er, how can I put this - helping
my baby sister celebrate her 21st birthday. Since she's studying in
Manchester, and I live near London, this involved a 400-mile round trip
in the Spit.
The weather was ok, but not brilliant - solid overcast, with a threat of
light showers, but the air was still fairly warm (by UK standards) from
last week's sun - so I decided to go top down. I'm pleased to say that
the car performed perfectly for the entire journey. There was not much
traffic at all on the way up, a bit more on the way back - I managed
75mph most of the way there, but slowing to 50 or 60 for traffic in
places on the way back. The temperature was steady at 1/2 way up the
guage. I checked the mileage on the way up, and found it to be around
36mpg (that's imperial gallons - sorry, can't remember how to convert to
US gallons, it's 1.2 but I can't remember whether to multiply or
divide!)
Unfortunately, only one other Triumph spotted - that was a Spitfire
which was broken down on the hard shoulder of the M40. Of course I
pulled over to see if I could help - he said he'd overheated. Usually I
carry a bottle of water for topping up the radiator, but since the
bottle broke, and I replaced my radiator with one which doesn't leak a
while ago, I'd decided not to carry my usual bottle of water with me.
The AA had already been called, so I left the driver with his car on the
hard shoulder. Don't know if it was someone from the list - if it was,
hope you got it sorted ok.
My sister's friends all loved the car. One of her friends phoned her
dad to say "Sheryl's brother has a car like the one you used to have."
Dad asked what the car was, and she said a Triumph Spitfire. Her Dad
said he didn't have one of them, his car was an MG Midget. Oh well,
it's pretty close! And my sisters new boyfriend managed to impress me
by drooling all over the car, and kissing her on the bonnet (hood) a
couple of times too - that kid's gonna go far!
Oh yes, and my sister had a pretty good time, too, although my wallet
felt pretty empty the next morning.
All in all, an enjoyable weekend - and proof that your Spitfire can be
relied on for long-distance journeys as long as it's looked after.
