Ah. . . if only it were so easy, but they thought of that.  You can NOT
install ANY engine earlier than the vehicle that it is going into.  So if
you have a 78, It requires a 78 or later - It *can* be a different engine,
but it will have to have ALL the required smog stuff that came with that
engine.  Then you have to take it to a "special" referee who determines
that it is correct, meets the requirements, and issues you a special tag
for the vehicle, identifying the engine/smog for that vehicle/engine combo,
which is required for your next inspection-
