and forgot to followup.  The other item to check is whether the cutout
relay is operating.  When the generator output voltage reaches the
cutout relay pickup voltage (12.7 to 13.3 volts) the relay should
engage and connect the output of the generator to the battery.
However, the ignition light should be nearly extinguished by this
time.  From your description, I don't suspect this to be the problem,
but it might be worth checking.
