I'm running autotap with the serial interface. For the tow vehicle ('01
gmc 2500) it is wonderful. There are enough scanned parameters to make
your head spin.(Interesting to watch the tranny temp go up when your
speed increases, but the dash gauge barely moves. Knock retard is also
interesting to watch when you hear the engine rattling.) For the toy
car, (04 srt4) It only has the basics, (o2-1, o2-2, fuel trim, rpm,
speed, tps position and a few others I can't think of at the moment.)
For the race car (99 Miata) same thing but it does clear the codes I've
encountered on the race car so far. I'm running V1 of the hardware
interface. V2 hardware is out now. There are some quirks with V2.05
software and occasionally I have to go back to v1.11 to make anything
work. The problem normally happens when I switch to a vehicle that is
different from the last one that it was used on. It doesn't matter if I
clear the config before connecting to the new vehicle. (that's their
work around.) It doesn't work on the 02 A4. (Mismatch error) I've been
eyeing the VAG software but haven't made the plunge yet. The autotap
logging works ok, but I think the new laptop (2ghz) is too fast.
Occasionally it appears to be logging but isn't really doing anything.
Other times it works fine. Was also thinking of spending the money and
getting a proper scanner, but when you add on all the modules, that is
running close to 2 grand. Ouch! And if it only does what autotap does,
I'd be a little annoyed. ;0 With the quirks aside, autotap has done
what I needed it to do.

Ok, I know this question gets asked every now and then, but this is an
area that is constantly growing.

I'm looking for a code reader for vehicles. I would prefer one that...

Does as many vehicle types as possible (but Ford, Jeep, and Chevy as a
min)
Hooks up to a laptop that allows readers while the car is being driven.
Allows me to reset idiot lights.
Preferable USB connection.

Does such a best exist? Who makes it? I would be willing to spend some
pretty good cash (hopefully <$500) on this.

Thanks.
