Don,

According to "Machinery's Handbook" the S.A.E. standards for straight 
splined fittings applied to the hole
(the female part of the splined joint).  There were four series of 
fittings: four-, six-, ten- and sixteen-spline.
Diameters of the first two were 3/4 to 3 inches, and for the later two, 3/4 
to 6 inches.
Splines were specified for permanent fitting, to slide when not under load, 
and to slide when under load.
In each series, the width of the "tooth" is a fixed proportion of the 
maximum diameter, D, eg, for 10-spline,
0.156 D.  The height of the tooth varied depending on type, thus permanent 
0.045 D, sliding not under load
0.070 D, and sliding under load 0.095 D.
