Outdoor compressor:
Don't know what part of the country you live in, but be aware that
compressors need to at the very least have crankcase heaters to maintain a
mminimum oil temperature in cold climates.  There's also the issue of
condensation and freezing of condensed maisture in the tank and piping when
the compressor is outside.

Compressor noise:
There is indeed significant mechanical noise in a compressor system, but a
huge portion of the racket is intake and exhaust noise.  Get meaningful
muffling on that, and you will have made the compressor surprisingly
quieter.
