Thanks, Larry.  Good links.  I pulled the air filter and there is no oil in 
the box or the filter.  The filter is a little dirty, so I suspect it was 
replaced at the last inspection a year ago.  There is oil around the top of 
the engine, so a valve cover gasket is probably worth the effort.  I'll also 
replace the PCV and make sure the hose is clear.
What about EGR?  I know a bad valve can cause running problems, but I am not 
very familiar with them.
