I have a more marketing-centric view of this....
Motorcycle rotors are drilled because you can easily see them and they look way
cool. Do you recall when street bikes first started coming out with rectangular
tube frames? A few of them only used them where the frame was visible, and had
round tubing for the hidden parts.
