  I realize this isn't a scientific response, but I use a cheap
one all the time, with no effects. Generally with insufficient
shielding sore eyes come in before any major damage, and I
certainly haven't had that.

  There are two kinds of auto darkening ones, the powered
ones that are in the order of 1/25000th of a second, and
the "solar powered" ones that just use the flash, and they
are more like 1/5000th of a second.

  I use the faster ones that use a battery.

  I wouldn't be too surprised if the prices are falling,
they are kind of a "high tech" thing and high tech
prices do that. ;>
