Peter has a "pressing" need:
You can do an amazing amount of "press" work without a press . . a big
vise, a lever-type arbor press and for some bushing and bearing
installations, a fine-threaded bolt and back-up plate can apply tons of
pressure. Of course, you'll still eventually want a "real" press and
something like the middle range Harbor Freight jobs should serve well . .
.that's about the class of unit I have. The first frustration happens when
you realize that the object to be held for the pressing operation requires
very individual and specific shaped plates and fixtures. You can buy a
variety of these things, make even more and you may find yourself using an
amazing number of available items. (old sockets are good pushers)
Eventually, a shop will accumulate a large enough selection of press-plates
and fixtures to suit most applications but the press can seem terribly
useless 'til then.
