Anyway, can someone tell me if there's a convenient source (like an online
source or a kind soul that knows a lot about TF's) to determine if a
chassis/engine/model number match, and if possible, what paint might have
been on the car from the factory? I mean something more than, for example,
the info that can be had from the Heilig book, which only gives ranges for
matching numbers.

Well, a good start is by comparing the numbers on the guarantee plate (on
the firewall on the left front of the toolbox) with the engine number (on an
octagonal plate on the engine right hand side on the crankcase). If these
match, that's a good start. The chassis number is stamped into the chassis
frame, but is generally difficult to locate.

The original color is part of the chassis number (on TFs and later only).
The third letter of that number will be either A for black, B for light
gray, C for Red, E for green, H for primer only, or P for Ivory. So, for
example HDA43xxxx would indicate an open two-seater MG North American export
car, with Black cellulose paint.

For more information, reference Anders Ditlev Clausager's book Original MG T
Series.

Lew Palmer
