Think in terms of the placement of roll centers front
and rear with the ground as the reference point. Then
how does the roll couple (joining front and rear roll
centers) with reference to vehicle center of gravity
affect things? Your answer to this has a great and
wonderful relationship to straight line stability.
Wheel backspace plays an important part in changing
vertical roll center placement. You don't have to have
active suspension or turn corners to benefit from
this.
One more thing; See what happens to active suspension
when you change vertical roll centers. Pay particular
attention to jacking effects and dynamics which will
generate more or less tire temp. Once again, these
things will affect straight line stability.
