Which type/brand of pump do you have? I've seen pumps, both points and 
SS, do some unexplainable things. Another thought: something in the tank 
that intermittently blocks the pickup. We bought a used tank for our BN2 
and experienced erratic behavior from the engine; my dad finally tracked 
it down to a pinhole leak near where the pickup was soldered to the 
tank. Dad surmised the flux used to facilitate the soldering eventually 
etched the hole (the tank was otherwise in good shape).
