YES, to adjust this properly you will need to turn the
steering wheel either to the right or left (nearly the end
of travel) and do the adjustment of the steering box in
that position. There is a jam nut with a slotted screw
on top of the steering box. Adjust it off center to get
it adjusted properly and to account for the wear in the
center. Next, take off the grease cap of the idler box
and have someone move the steering wheel back and
forth a little. If you can see play on the top to the idler
box mechanism, it needs to be rebuilt. Dean at Fairlady
does it and cost is about $145 exchange. He does a
nice job. Are the ball joints worn out? Steering rods,
as in the outer tie rods and center link worn? What about
the upper and lower A-arm suspension bushings and
spindle shafts. Have you repacked the front wheel bearings.
Did you look to see if all of the bolts that hold the A-frame
spindle shaft bolts are tight. And for that matter how about the
steering and idler box bolts, are they tight..
