I had this happen once. Literally all that was left was the base of the
filter. A cold chisel on the edge and it came right off!

If it gets that bad (you have half-destroyed the filter but it still won't
budge), remove the oil filter mount from the block and take it to a machine
shop. It's only two bolts.
