I tried the screwdriver method once.  The only thing that was left was the
filter's base still firmly attached to the filter mount.
If you get two long enough screwdrivers/punches/extensions/etc. you can put
each one into one of the holes in the filter base 180 degrees opposed to one
another.  Holding them in an X orientation will allow you to apply force to
the filter base and will get the filter base off - usually.  That way you
can avoid looking foolish to your local machinist.

If it gets that bad (you have half-destroyed the filter but it still won't
budge), remove the oil filter mount from the block and take it to a machine
shop. It's only two bolts.
