that it's a little "notchy" going from 1st to 2nd - it grinds if you're not
careful.  I don't know if this is serious or just because an adjustment is
needed (the clutch is grossly out of adjustment).

Hi Fred-
That sounds like the common worn second gear synchro that most cars this
vintage have.  It's not serious necessarily, but you need to learn how
to shift it without grinding.... my '66 1600 had a lazy #2 synchro, and
with a little effort, I learned to double clutch with ease!
