No, R's are just fine.  For their vintage they are great.  MUCH better than 
most, (Leylands, Fiats,
Alfa's, etc) maxed out you start to run into crank/rod oiling issues, breathing 
and cam/lifter problems,
but they are a good solid, dependable street motor (many of the others I 
mentioned aren't even
up to that).   L's are a more certainly a more elegant design, but  R-'s are 
just great for 
most uses.

Oh, no, Jim,
        What's wrong with the R16?  I tend to think of 'em as tough little
puppies, restrictive head design notwithstanding.  Maybe not where you'd
start for a race motor, but great for pushing a little roadster around
at reasonable speeds.
        Now, try to lash an overhead cam on it, and I'll start to agree with
you... <grin>
