My resto project car sat for 20 years. Dropped the gas tank and found a
layer of goo on the inside. Maybe if you know your car will sit for 20
years you should drain out the gas, and properly clean and then store the
tank indoors!
Anyway, it's at a radiator shop getting cleaned in an acetone bath. They told me
a few days should be enough. Well, the goo is so bad that it took two weeks to
dissolve. I pick up the like-new tank in a few days, cost $100.
The inspection plate is easy to open up, unless the four screws are frozen.
Shouldn't need a gasket as there is air space between the trunk and the tank.
Visible through the inspection hole, is a round cover on the tank with fuel
gauge control wires. Disconnect the two wires. There's a locking ring. Tap it
with a screwdriver and hammer to rotate it free, and lift it off. You can then
lift the fuel gauge assembly and separate it from the fuel tank. Be careful not
to bump the mechanism or float, and set it aside in a safe place.
There is a round rubber gasket there. Inspect it, and be careful not to lose it.
Don't know where you can buy a replacement if needed, but it ought to be easy to
fabricate a replacement. Although you can shine a flashlight inside to get an
idea of the condition of the inside surface, you won't be able to see all of it
because there are baffles on the side that hide some of the area. All that goo
in mine prevented it from rusting, imagine that.
