How serious do you want to get with it?
A mild 3.9 build with good cam, ported heads, and EFI (maybe MegaSquirt)
or even Edelbrock manifold + Weber carb should go pretty well in your
car.
If you want to "do it right", I'd be looking for a later 4.0 or even 4.6
with EFI and DIS, and a reasonably priced after-market fuel+ignition
computer like a Link. Drop in a hotter cam (piper 285?), "stage 1"
heads, up the compression with new pistons, free up the breathing with a
custom inlet and exhaust, and maybe roller rockers if you feel rich.
As for gearboxes, I think Toyota 5 speed is the way to go for modified
setups like this. Rover adapters are available. Alternatively, you could
run a Rover or Land Rover manual box.
