While I'll say it differently, bottom line is I agree with Greg Meboe.
For the MGB you describe, I'd guess the "wholesale" is about $1500
and the "retail" is about $3000 ($5500 demands a  little more than
5 mph when warm!).  In a private deal, the seller and buyer would
probably settle between $2000 and $2500.  Your job now is to get the
dealer down to reality, before somebody with stars comes along and
offers the $3000.
