The latter, is my current mode of operation

Could it be that their is a compression leak (say for example between the SU's
and the manifold..
Upon removing and inspecting (the gaskets), there was some 'muck' on it which I
cleaned and
refitted (was this wise ? or should I have replaced the gaskets ? I suspect the
latter would be
true !) Any thoughts or net wisdom on this ?
