     I had a similar experience mating the tranny to my Spridget
engine.  I rotated the input shaft on the transmission slightly, 
and that let the splines line up with the pressure plate -- 
voila!  It sounds pretty simple but it took me a while to figure 
it out.  I thought I had something wrong with the pilot bushing, 
but then I always seem to make things more complicated than they 
should be.  If you've already done this, you're on your own!
