MGB starter problems.

I realize that this is a very stupid suggestion, but I overlooked it non-the
-less.

Have you checked to see if the nut holding the starter motor contact to
the solenoid is tight? 

I guess I must have inadvertently loosened this nut when removing the
starter 4 years ago. When puting the car back together two weeks ago,
I too experienced the same story as you relayed.
I was just about to give up the starter for dead
when I decided to try to replace the solenoid . The first nut I
went for was the starter motor contact ("hey, how come its already
loose?"). I retightened the nut, and voila: a perfectly functioning
starter.

Just my stupid suggestion for the day.
