If your speedo cable that is currently on the car is properly installed
you will have to remove the trany cover. the cable is routed up over
the top of the trany and through a hold down clamp either on the top
cover or the upper part of the bell housing. If your car has OD you
will need to remove the trany cover. You will also find that the OD
cars have a right angle addapter. This is the most likley peice to
break. It is also very expensive to replace.

All in all you will find life much easier if you remove the trany cover.
while you have it all torn apart do some other standard matainace that
would require you to remove the cover. Like change the trany fluid,
check and or rebuild the clutch slave cylinder, replace the fluid in the
clutch system, check the U joints, check the bushings in the shift lever
and replace if necessary, etc.
