        However, normally the 'ambient' temperature of the air is
        higher than the outside air when it reached your cylinders, due
        to the heating of the intake manifold and carburation/etc. air
        intake systems...

        If you have the ability to insulate portions of the air intake 
        system (carburator from intake manifold, intake manifold from 
        head, etc.) you can effectively get cooler air into the cylinder...
        rather, air which is heated less on the way in...
