Battery cable insulation has a much higher thermal
rating than welding cable. Current carrying capacity
is a function of conductor cross sectional area and
material resistance for a given heat rise. In this
respect, they're the same for a given size, though
the welding cable will carry less max current for a
given size in the elevated temperature of an engine
compartment.

Even battery cable insulation isn't good enough in
this application though. It will take type PFA or TFE
(or equal) if no sheath is used.

The main attribute of welding cable is it's
flexibility due to high number of strands.
