Surface oxidation can be buffed out, just like paint. UV damage 'goes all
the way to the bone' so to speak, consequently, the amount of visible
discoloration will vary with thickness. My white car becomes a mass of
changing hues, particularly under sodium lighting, from all the time it
spent in Fla.
BTW, it always had a good coat of wax that advertised it's UV protection.
Interestingly, this same wax protected a regular paint job just fine on
another car during the same period. This car didn't make trips to Fla.,
indicating that either the atmosphere lets more UV through down there, or
increased salt content in the air affected it in some way.
